Course Overview	Syllabus: This class will focus on Stephen Crane’s first novel, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets. Although he is best known for The Red Badge of Courage, Maggie is also considered an important work in American Literature. This work is regarded as one of, if the first, works of American literary naturalism. It will also incorporate the work of journalist Jacob Riis, famous for his work How the Other Half Lives that documented life in the poor sections of New York in the late 1800s. Lectures will begin with these two, discuss the history of the Bowery section of New York, and move on to Maggie. We will discuss the work in terms of its place in American Literature, how it is written, as well as the social context. Lectures will also involve literary naturalism, its sources and later history.
