Course Overview |
This class will focus on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s most famous novel: The Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne was the descendant of Puritans, including one of the judges for the Salem witch trials. Much of his fiction investigates and critiques Puritans, their beliefs, and their hypocrisies, non more so than The Scarlet Letter. For this class, we will skip the opening section, “The Custom House,” which is set in Hawthorne’s contemporary time, returning to it at the end if time permits. We will also discuss Hawthorne as comprising, along with Herman Melville, one of the three branches of the Romantic movement in the U.S, their similarities and differences. We will also examine Hawthorne’s method of composition and symbolism. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
