Course Overview

The novelist Henry James (1843-1916) was born in America, but lived most of his adult life in England. Moreover, he was obsessed by the contrast of American and European character, and the relations between America and Europe was one of the most important themes in his writing. Thus James is the perfect writer to study in order to explore the theme of British-American connections―and it is the perfect time: this year is the centenary of his death. All students welcome, especially those interested in: transatlantic fiction; the history of the novel; gender and the portrayal of women in fiction.
小説家ヘンリージェイムズはアメリカに生まれました。しかし生涯の大半を英国で過ごしました。彼はアメリカ人と欧州人のキャラクターの違いにこだわりました。このテーマは彼のすべての文章の中でよく見えます。ですからジェイムズは英国とアメリカのつながりを学ぶためにとてもいい作家であり、今年は彼の死後１００年という節目でもあります。すべての学生に学んでほしい文学です。特に小説の歴史やジェンダー、に興味のある学生におすすめです。
We wil read Daisy Miller and An International Episode, 「デイジー・ミラー」と「国際挿話」を読む予定です。
