Course Overview |
This seminar analyzes religious practices and beliefs in connection to the boundaries of the religious and the secular in Japan. In particular, we focus on the interplay of religion with traditional arts (the tea ceremony) in relation to issues of nihonjinron and orientalism; and popular culture in relation to communication strategies used by religious institutions in Japan to cope with the needs of today’s society; as well as the image creation of religions in well-known anime, such as Mononoke hime (Princess Mononoke) and Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away) by Miyazaki Hayao. In this regard, we explore different forms of commercialization of religions, religious “branding,” and innovative ways of proselytization and promotion. Moreover, the course analyzes the religious/secular paradigm in Japanese festivals and the interplay of religion and tourism, religion and local government/politics, and revival of festivals after disasters. In addition to the readings, audiovisual material (anime, documentaries, and movies) will be screened and discussed in class. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
