Course Overview |
This seminar will provide an overview of crucial themes in the history of trade, diplomacy, and exchange in East Asia. The course will trace continuities as well as changes in political, institutional, economic, religious, cultural and social processes centering on the oceans and seas of East Asia, with more in-depth coverage of the period form the sixth until the fourteenth century. At the same time, this course will be used to familiarize students with a variety of approaches to the past used by historians. We will examine how historians conceive of their object of study, how they use primary sources as a basis for their accounts, how they structure the narrative and analytic discussion of their topic, and what the advantages and drawbacks of their various approaches are. The readings consist of works that made significant contributions to their respective subfields and have been selected to give as wide a coverage in both field and methodology as possible in one semester's worth of reading. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
