Course Overview

This course broadly surveys the arts and culture of Japan through various media including architecture, sculpture, and painting from prehistory to the contemporary period. Sessions will introduce important cultural moments and monuments that have come to define Japan in its various periods. Special attention will be paid to the roles the artifacts play in their specific socio-cultural contexts and what they reveal about the Japanese artistic traditions over the centuries.

Active participation in discussion and high-level critical analysis in papers and tests.	Command of understanding of the works of art in their historical context. Active participation in discussion.
