Course Overview |
This seminar comprises seven on-site study days in the Kansai region, including Kyoto, Uji, Nara, and Asuka. It is preceded by preparation on campus, through group planning meetings and independent preparation using an extensive reading list. We will also meet after our return if students would like to share photos and reminisce. The seminar is a required course for all first-year MA students; others may join pending faculty approval. As the schedule indicates, we will visit archaeological sites, temples, shrines, museums, and participate in meetings and activities relating to the study of ancient and modern cultural history. Course faculty will endeavor to structure the course with student interests, study plans, and current and future IMAP seminars; special events and exhibitions in Kansai will also enhance the schedule. Full participation is expected of all students, both leading up to the seminar and during each scheduled activity. Although each site will typically be “led” by one or more IMAP faculty, or occasional guests, your preparation is the core of the learning process. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
