Course Overview This graduate seminar examines popular narratives from historical through contemporary Japan and modern methodologies in studying them. Relevant primary sources revolve around non-elite modes of expression: oral histories, epic tales, local legends, stories of the supernatural, music, religious festivals, manga, anime, and film. Through analyses of these mediums, we will explore the underlying belief structures that have shaped ideas concerning death and the afterlife, ethics, otherness, and the spiritual realm in Japan. The course also interrogates the intellectual construct of the ‘folk’ and folk religion. To quote the American folklorist Alan Dundes, “Who are the folk?” How does this concept relate to regional versus national identity, civilized versus so-called primitive populations, premodern versus modern categories?

Course Overview This seminar aims to introduce first-year IDOC students to the theoretical and practical foundations of historical research. Any attempt at being comprehensive is of course futile, but we will pay attention to some of the diverse approaches that have shaped historical work inside and outside Japan, both in premodern and modern times. We will consider what makes someone a 'historian' as well as how and why historians investigate, interpret, and write about the past. We will also pay attention to the underlying--and often unspoken--assumptions embedded in historical research.

Course Overview This course surveys the history of Japanese literature, from ancient times through the medieval period. We will read texts from a variety of genres: narrative tales, poetry, diaries, and plays. While the discussion of modern literature is beyond the scope of this course, the Meiji-period institutionalization of the academic discipline of national literature and the reception of traditional literature in modern times form one of its foci. We will examine the role of literature in the modern formation of a Japanese cultural identity. Other topics of focus include processes of canonization, the reception and modification of Chinese literary models, material and performative aspects of literary practice, and literature’s relationship to broader social, political, and religious currents.

Course Overview This course examines visual representations of travel culture of travel in pre-modern Japan, with a particular focus on the Edo period (1603-1867). The experience of and relationship with travel were diverse, influenced by factors such as class, status, occupation, gender, and nationality. For example, feudal loads, who were required to reside in Edo for a certain period, had to travel back and forth between Edo and their domains. For foreign envoys, such as those from the Ryukyu Kingdom and Korea, a visit to the Shogun in Edo held diplomatic significance; at the same time, it was an opportunity for the Shogunate to assert its supremacy over foreign countries. Shoguns and emperors made pilgrimages to Nikko Tōshōgū which enshrined the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate Tokugawa Ieyasu. While shoguns visited to pay homage and solidify their power, imperial visits indicated the court’s submission to the Shogunate. Travel was indispensable part of certain occupations, including traders, fishermen, itinerant religious practitioners, and street performers. Commoners actively journeyed for various purposes including sightseeing, pilgrimage, and medical treatment. Gender played a significant role in travel culture as women required special permission to pass through checkpoints and were excluded from various sacred spaces including well-known pilgrimage sites. Additionally, the afterlife experience was often described as a journey through the underworld to rebirth, with the deceased being dressed in travel attire. By exploring various forms of art inspired and developed in pre-modern travel culture, this course reveals multi-faceted aspects of travel and demonstrates its significance and meanings for diverse populations.

Course Overview This course examines some basic methodologies practiced in the visual culture studies. We will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each methodology, how we can apply these to our own research questions, and, in reverse, what kind of research questions would be asked in each methodology. Due to the high demand of interdisciplinary research, being knowledgeable about using images in research are becoming more important in any field. Therefore, although the focus of this course is on art in early modern to modern Japan, it is open to any students who are working on such fields as literature, religion, history.
In the first half of class, we discuss the points in the textbook and share what we have faced in our research regarding to the point. In the second part, we will discuss how each methodology was applied in the research of Japanese art. Students will be asked to deliver a short presentation on an image focusing on what kind of methodology they will use for analysis in the last day of the course, and submit an essay based on the presentation.

1 Day 1 Introduction
We discuss some problems we have faced in conducting research. The difficulties in choosing the right methods that matches our research questions, researching the images online (social media, etc.) and applying Western theories to Japanese art history will be addressed.
Reading
“2 Researching with visual materials: a brief survey of conceptual debates” and “3 A critical visual methodology” in Visual Methodologies, pp. 14–71.
2 Day 2 Compositional Interpretation
It is often said that ‘looking carefully’ is important for understanding and researching an object. We will look at some examples to describe images and objects effectively.
Readings
“7 Compositional interpretation: looking with a ‘good eye’” in Visual Methodologies, pp. 117–147.

3 Day 3 Content analysis
Some research requires an analysis using bulk of data. This may be used for the images and objects under investigation, or as a step to figure out what kind of images and objects we need to focus on.
Reading
“8 Content analysis and cultural analytics: finding patterns in what you see” in Visual Methodologies, pp. 148–169.
4 Day 4 Semiology
Semiology is a type of methodology that is used to make the message of the image clear, focusing on the signs and structures in the image. We will analyze how this methodology is applicable to Japanese art through an example of a research on the screen, Maple Viewing at Takao.
