Course Overview	"Pictures of the floating world," or ukiyoe, are doubtlessly one of the most recognizable and influential stylistic genres of Japanese pre-modern art. This seminar focuses on multi-color woodblock prints that were created during the Edo period (1615-1868). We will discuss techniques, styles, subjects, and social contexts of this commoner art and will also delve into the related fields of theater, book illustration, object design, and cover some indigenous traditions of image-text interaction that predate the emergence of ukiyo-e. Not the least, we will address the lasting legacy of Japanese print culture that keeps relevant for Western modernity and contemporary global art.
