Course Overview This seminar is eligible for IMAP / IDOC students and by teacher's permission only. We will read and discuss selected texts relating to the rich traditions of architecture and material culture in Japan spanning from temples and shrines to reception halls, tea huts, castles, gardens and residential buildings as well as crafted objects. A particular focus will be the functions of manmade environment and the underlying concepts of “spatial thinking” in Japanese culture as well as the interaction of architecture with interior furnishing and human performance. Although the main focus will be Japan before 1900, there will be a critical discussion of “Japanese styles” and “Japaneseness” in modern and contemporary architecture, both in Japan and the West.
