Course Overview This course focuses on various types of religious specialists in Japan’s history. Through the category of ‘vernacular,’ it emphasizes the orality, performance, hybrid practices, and localities of these figures. Throughout much of the twentieth century, the fields of Japanese religions and Buddhist studies more broadly privileged religion at the elite level: the Buddhist canon, state patronage, doctrine and philosophy, and so forth. Practice and the quotidian realm became the domain of “folk studies” (minzokugaku in Japan), a field with its own shortcomings, including the romanticization of its subjects and a lack of attention to historical change. Both fields have made significant improvements in recent decades, narrowing the perceived gap between ‘elite’ and ‘popular.’ This course explores recent research on religious practitioners whose social networks, ritual practice, knowledge systems, and livelihoods blur these categories. Class meetings center on a particular type of figure: street preachers, mountain ascetics, female mediums, diviners, etc. Our task will be twofold: 1) to study what role they played in society and 2) to evaluate previous scholarship on the topics at hand. Students will facilitate discussions, write brief weekly responses, and over the course of the semester, develop a research project of their own choice.
