Course Overview This class explores the art and visual culture of Japan’s “early modern age,” that is the Edo period. It will be based on the concept of an Early Modern Globalization and explore how Edo period Japan (1) constituted a characteristic, Asian brand of Early Modernity; (2) participated in international developments and exchanges; and (3) laid foundations for the country’s rapid modernization during the Meiji to Showa periods.
