Course Overview |
This class will focus on the Sherwood Anderson book Winesburg, Ohio (1919), a work that marks a shift in American Literature away from the realist representational style then prevalent. It is also one of the most influential works in 20th century American Literature. The work focuses on the inhabitants of a small town in the 1890s, a time of shifting away from an agricultural to an industrial society. We will read these stories in concert with an essay contained in the Norton Critical Edition. We will examine the grotesque, Anderson’s expressionism, among other issues with the work. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
