Course Overview While focusing on Kyushu in general and northern Kyushu in particular, this class introduces the major works of ancient Japanese literature: the Kojiki and Nihon shoki, the Man'yōshū, and the fudoki gazetteers. Field trips to sites in and around Fukuoka help contextualize the written sources and provide insights into how the distant past has been curated and transformed over successive ages in shrines, temples, archaeological sites, museums, parks, and so on. In addition to a deeper understanding of the earlier strata of local history that will complement the required Kyushu in Situ course, students will also gain greater familiarity with the culture of premodern Japan (from the Yayoi through the early Heian periods).
