Course Overview The class is a intensive class to be held the first 8 weeks of this term. It is tentatively scheduled for Friday afternoons (starting at 12:30 or 1) for 2.75 hours with a break. On field trip Fridays it will be held on another day, likely Tuesday.

This is a required course for all IMAP first year students and research students.
All students who are art history majors and took the same course with Prof. Yang should also attend.

Course outline
Selected works of art, architecture, and visual culture are examined as objects/sites with material and visual properties, and as cultural products. Themes such as patronage, ritual use, gendered readings, among many others will be explored.

Part I of the Arts and Visual Cultures of Japan comprises the study of various genres and sites, including painting, sculpture, religious and secular crafts, gardens, architecture, temple plans, and historical sites from the Kofun through early Heian periods (fifth to twelfth century). Part II comprises the study of the same from the Kamakura through early Meiji period (twelfth through nineteenth century). We will also visit museum exhibitions if time allows.
