Course Overview Using a wide range of activities (lecture, discussion, online learning, quizzes, student presentations, etc.) this course provides students with an opportunity to explore how Europeans have described and interpreted Japan through centuries of contact. We will use primary source materials written by travelers, missionaries, adventurers, teachers, traders, and scholars to study how Japan was viewed between the thirteenth and the nineteenth centuries. Through readings and discussions students will also explore the concept of Orientalism, representations of the "Other," and Japan’s place in European historical imagination.
Throughout the semester students will also be working on an individual research project that focuses on the life and achievements of one European visitor of Japan. At the end of the course, each student will present their final findings at a mini-symposium.

講義 Class time will typically be divided in two parts. After an initial lecture on the broad historical background of that week’s topic, the class will continue workshop-style to address issues raised by readings and assignments. It is therefore important that students come to class prepared (and armed with a dictionary, if necessary). During the final weeks of the semester, all students will be required to give a brief oral presentation.
