Course Overview The samurai is, together with the geisha, a quintessential and heavily stereotyped embodiment of Japanese culture. Both in Japan and abroad the samurai triggers either fascination and fetishization, or ridicule and disgust. In this seminar we aim for a fresh look at the historical role that this social group played with a focus on art history and material culture. We will discuss artifacts that either were commissioned by samurai or have samurai as their theme. Both types of artifact therefore are important components in the construction of social identity. Our artifacts date mostly from the Heian to the Edo periods and include paintings, sculptures, buildings, weapons, costumes, lacquer, ceramic, and metal objects. By subjecting the artifacts to close readings and identifying changes in style, facture, purpose, and social context we will attempt to rid ourselves of the manifold layers of legend, nostalgia, and nationalist revisionism that often obscure a clear understanding. The seminar will also provide an incomplete survey of political art from the “late classical” to the early modern periods.
Keywords : Art history, architecture, classical period, medieval period, early modernity, visual culture, material culture, social identity
