Course Overview

This course introduces students to the premodern languages of Japan, including bungo (literary Japanese) and kanbun (literary Sinitic). The majority of the course consists of a systematic study of bungo grammar, facilitated by drills and the reading and translation of primary text excerpts. We will also learn the rudiments of kanbun and kundoku (reading by gloss) and there will be at least one unit on reading kuzushiji (cursive script) and hentaigana (non-standard kana characters). In addition to regular drills, homework, and tests, students will be required to complete a translation project at the end of the term to demonstrate proficiency.
