Course Overview Through a study of material and visual cultures of Japan from the third millennium BCE through the early 20th century, course participants will acquire and develop practical specialist knowledge and skills needed for further research in premodern and early modern Japanese art and cultural history.
Sessions will introduce important cultural moments and monuments that have come to define Japan and critique the historiography of their reception. It will introduce examples of paintings, statues, gardens, temples, shrines, and issues relating to culture and artistic production, with the goal of providing a window as to why art and culture are produced and how they have functioned throughout Japanese history.
Lectures will discuss works and sites in detail, contextualizing these artifacts not only within their moment of creation but also their reception through history and in cultures abroad.

Course Overview In this seminar students will acquire and develop the practical specialist knowledge and skills needed for research in Japanese humanities, including the fields of archaeology, art history, cultural history, history, literature, and religious studies. After laying the foundation by reviewing style and writing requirements, learning how to summarize and critique a lecture and analyze an essay, create an annotated bibliography, and other research skills, students will present their work. Seminar activities include class discussions, the completion of an online course, and student presentations in addition to faculty and guest lectures.

Course Overview This course builds on skills developed in “Introduction to Kobun.” The focus will be on reading and translating a variety of literary texts from the 8th through 15th centuries. Students will gain exposure to a number of styles, including wabun, wakan konkōbun, and kanbun, as well as a number of different genres, from tales and diaries to belles-lettres to poetry. While readings have been chosen to align with materials covered in “Japan: A Literary History,” student research interests will be taken into account as we move through the syllabus.

Course Overview This course acquaints students with the major forms of theater and performance in Japan, from earliest times to the twentieth century, including noh, kabuki, bunraku, folk performance, modern realist theater, and post-war dance. Though we will proceed more or less chronologically in order to better appreciate the accretionary dynamics so central to the history of theater, we will also attend to the various kinds of continuity and rupture revealed by looking to the future or delving into the past. The syllabus is made up of several kinds of text: plays, accounts, theater history scholarship, and theory. We will furthermore make use of recordings of performances to study those modalities that are difficult to access through text, including movement, gesture, and sound. By the end of the semester, students will have a grasp of the multisensory richness of theater and performance as it developed over time and interacted with shifting religious, social, and political currents.

Course Overview This course is for students intending to conduct graduate research in the field of Japanese history. Each participant will be required to devise a reading and research trajectory to accomplish their particular research goal. This includes writing an independent study proposal, developing an appropriate reading list, and designing a research schedule.
The proposal (approx. 1000 words) and an initial reading list should be submitted on the first day of class (October 3, 2019). Generally, students should propose a topic in relation to their MA thesis. The proposal should include a statement of the objective(s) of the project as well as a description of the research and reading to be undertaken.
Students will be informed of their acceptance into this course within three days of the first class. They will then be asked to expand their reading list and research schedule to comprise a semester’s worth of academic material and work.

Course Overview This graduate seminar provides an in-depth study of the Edo period through both written sources and material culture. After reviewing the most significant scholarly literature and reference works on the period, students will read primary source materials (in translation and in Japanese) and learn to interpret remains from historic-period archaeological sites to acquire the specialist skills needed to undertake research in Edo-period history.
Topics to be explored include the built environment, the material culture of rituals, and center-periphery relations.

Course Overview This graduate seminar examines popular narratives from historical through contemporary Japan and modern methodologies in studying them. Relevant primary sources revolve around non-elite modes of expression: oral histories, epic tales, local legends, stories of the supernatural, music, religious festivals, manga, anime, and film. Through analyses of these mediums, we will explore the underlying belief structures that have shaped ideas concerning death and the afterlife, ethics, otherness, and the spiritual realm in Japan. The course also interrogates the intellectual construct of the ‘folk’ and folk religion. To quote the American folklorist Alan Dundes, “Who are the folk?” How does this concept relate to regional versus national identity, civilized versus so-called primitive populations, premodern versus modern categories?

Course Overview Kyushu offers a rich variety of cultural, historical, and archaeological sites. In this two-year course (credits will be given in the fourth semester), first- and second-year students of the IMAP in Japanese Humanities will visit early settlements, burial mounds, castle ruins, pottery kiln towns, textile production areas, maritime trade centers, temples, shrines, art installations, museum exhibitions, and other sites of interest.
This semester, the course will consist of a number of one-day excursions as well as an extended, five-day excursion.
Destinations for the five-day excursion include Mt. Aso, Takachiho shrine, Miyazaki Jingu, the Saitobaru Archaeological Museum, and shrines and temples on the Kunisaki peninsula.
All IMAP students are required to attend the one-day excursions; only first-year IMAP students are required to participate in the five-day excursion, but other students may join pending approval from the course instructors.

Course Overview Supernatural beings and people's fascinations for them exist in every culture. Yet every society imagines these creatures in different ways, revealing both universal and culturally specific concerns for making sense of mysterious, threatening, and inexplicable phenomena. Ghosts, demons and monsters are very much part of our popular imagination, religious rituals, public and private devotions, and entertainment. Thus, the study of ghosts and monsters can serve as useful analytical tools for understanding a wide range of cultural and social developments.

This course examines Japanese works of art through the lens of the supernatural (yokai, mononoke, bakemono, ayakashi, yurei, etc). The first part of the course addresses various theoretical and multidisciplinary approaches to the concept of the "monster" and theories on Japanese "yokai". The second part focuses on analyzing visual representations of the supernatural through specific artworks such as the "Kitano Tenjin Engi Emaki" and "Shutendoji Emaki." We will explore the cultural, political and social influences of the supernatural at different historical moments, considering them as mechanisms by which we might understand certain aspects of Japanese culture and society, as well as more universal ideas of selfhood and human nature.
