Course Overview *Social Linguistics*

How do language, society, and culture relate? How is power related to language use? How does society influence language, and language, society? How are social categories and norms related to language, and how do people use language to display their identity? How and why do we express politeness? What are the connections between gender and language? What is linguistic taboo, and why does it exist? How is language used to create humor? How are linguistic and social expectations challenged and for what purposes?

These are some of the questions that we will ask in this course. As we try to answer them, we will explore how language can be studied systematically on many levels, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Through readings and in-class lecture, discussion, and analysis, students will hone their awareness of linguistic features and their analytical skills, as well as their critical evaluations of argumentation, and they will learn to recognize and analyze the social functions language serves.

Goals
To study human language from a social perspective. To observe and analyze some of the many connections and influences between language and culture. To gain understanding of various issues in sociolinguistics and social linguistics. To become familiar with ideas like solidarity and identity and understand how they can be expressed through language use.
Keywords : linguistics, sociology, anthropology, sociolinguistics, gender, humor, taboo, politeness
Prerequisites :
Required Ability : Your English listening should be good enough to understand at least three-quarters of the spoken English Carey uses in lectures (it's ok if you can't understand every idea immediately though). If not, you should record the lectures and listen to them again to review.
Notes All work in this class must be done by you, or, for group work, with the members of your group. If you use another source you must cite the source (= say where you got that information). Copying a classmate’s work or work from another source (i.e. Wikipedia, New York Times, or another textbook) is called plagiarism and is very serious. If you copy even 3-4 words, or an idea, from somewhere, just cite the source! Say where you found it. Then it is research, instead of plagiarism. (You can even cite your classmate – though, of course, it is usually more meaningful to cite a published source, written by an expert.)

講義 The course is designed to deepen the students' knowledge of the subject matter by having the teacher give explanations (or write on the board), and by having the students answer questions or discuss or debate ideas in small groups from time to time.

Take notes in class. Some students misunderstand Carey's extensive handouts, thinking that they are enough, but the point is to take notes in addition to these handouts, based on what is said in class. Try to write down everything that is important – don't assume that you will remember. Imagine that your job is to give the same lecture, based only on the handout. (In fact, that idea is what the final exam is based on.)

Study Consultation (Office Hours) Study Consultation (Office Hours) : Any time I am in my office, students are welcome to visit. To schedule an appointment, please email me. Suggestion for success (Specific) : Take notes in class.

If you want to succeed, you need to *care about* our class. Here are some specific suggestions: Don't miss class. Keep up with the homework. Keep up with the syllabus.

More suggestions: Keep your mind open. Engage with the material. Express yourself, the best you can. Don't be scared about whether your grammar or pronunciation is “good enough”. Just keep expressing yourself in English. It’s very lucky to be a student! (And I am lucky to be your teacher!) Let's make the most of our chance. Don't allow yourself to miss valuable opportunities because of shyness or laziness. Relax and enjoy yourself. What you get out of it depends on what you put into it, so work hard but happily!

Even more suggestions: After a good night’s sleep, on the morning of our class, meditate, exercise, and eat a healthy breakfast with protein (and a healthy lunch as well for afternoon classes). Then, be in class on time and ready to participate. If you are sleepy, drink some coffee or tea so you have the mental energy to fully participate in class.
