Course Overview *Creative Writing: Poetry*

Overview
The class will give students a chance to work on their English reading, writing, and self-expression skills. They will read and write poetry in English, and share what they have written in class. No special background is required – complete beginners are welcome. Class time will be used to read, discuss, and share English poetry. We will do some in-class writing as well. Students will keep a poetry journal, writing in it for 10 minutes a day, every day.

Goals
1) To help students learn to appreciate poetry in English
2) To help students learn to write poetry in English
3) To develop creative use of English in a relaxed, fun setting
4) To give students a chance to express their thoughts and feelings in writing.
5) To use English poetry to study English phonology, vocabulary, and grammar.
6) To give students a chance to keep a journal, to help improve both their written English and their self-expression abilities, with the hope that it becomes a habit that they keep after the course is finished.
7) To give students a chance to practice presenting their artistic creations to small groups of peers in a supportive setting
8) To practice analyzing and critiquing poetry

Additional Information regarding Evaluation Method : Homework and Grading
You will write, share, edit, analyze, and submit five poems. Each poem represents 7% of your grade.
(You will write many more than five poems, but you will choose the best / your favorite ones to share and submit.)
As homework and in class as well, you will keep a poetry journal, which is worth 35% of your grade.
At home, you will write 10 minutes a day in your journal. That totals 70 minutes a week, so Carey might assign reading or memorization sometimes for an additional 20 minutes = 90 minutes per week
You will also collect poems that are meaningful to you in the journal. You can collect them from our class work, or from anywhere outside.
There will be a final exam given in class on January 29. It will test students’ understanding of the ideas and analyses discussed in the course.

5 poems X 7 points = 35%
Poetry journal = 35%
Final exam = 30%

Students who do not come to classes will lose points on their final grade. 3 missed classes = minus 10%, 4 missed classes = minus 20%, 5 missed classes = you cannot pass the course. If you sleep in class it doesn’t count as participation, and you will be considered absent.
If you miss a class due to illness, please talk to the teacher as soon as possible and bring a doctor's note to the next class, and be prepared to do a makeup assignment.

Suggestion for success (Specific) : Suggestions for Success (specific)
If you want to succeed, you need to *care about* our class. Here are some specific suggestions: Don't miss class. Keep up with the homework. Keep up with the syllabus.

More suggestions: Keep your mind open. Engage with the material. Express yourself, the best you can. Don't be scared about whether your grammar or pronunciation is “good enough”. Just keep expressing yourself in English. It’s very lucky to be a student! (And I am lucky to be your teacher!) Let's make the most of our chance. Don't allow yourself to miss valuable opportunities because of shyness or laziness. Relax and enjoy yourself. What you get out of it depends on what you put into it, so work hard but happily!

Even more suggestions: After a good night’s sleep, on the morning of our class, meditate, exercise, and eat a healthy breakfast with protein (and a healthy lunch as well for afternoon classes). Then, be in class on time and ready to participate. If you are sleepy, drink some coffee or tea so you have the mental energy to fully participate in class.
