Course Overview This course is called a survey, but a more appropriate title might be something like “critical interventions in the study of Japanese religions.” In that sense, it is more about methodology and approach, while engaging the thorny issues scholars of Japanese religions have wrestled with over the last several decades. Student-led discussions will center on questions critical to the development and continuation of the field. What’s been accomplished in the previous scholarship? What’s been problematic? What’s still understudied and awaits future discovery? Themes will include medieval paradigms, the dating of Shinto, defining Shugendō, modern constructions of religion, issues of women and gender, and discourse and practice related to spirituality.
This course is an IMAP survey course and fulfills the graduation requirement of completing 3 out of the 4 surveys (typically one is offered per semester).
