Course Overview This course provides students with an opportunity to explore how Europeans have described and interpreted Japan through centuries of contact. We will use primary source materials written by travellers, missionaries, adventurers, teachers, traders, and scholars to learn about life in Japan and in Europe between the thirteenth and the twentieth centuries. Through readings and discussions, students will also explore such concepts as Orientalism, representation of other cultures, and Japanfs place in European historical imagination.
