Course Overview |
This course uses designated national treasures as gateways into the history, culture and art of Japanfs past. In doing so, the course aims to highlight not just some of the most visible works of art in Japan, but also reveal the process of canon-formation, how the national treasure system was set up, and the construction of art history or memory as we recall the cultural history of a nation via its ebestf and emost-representativef objects. Through these national treasures, a secondary goal is to give the students an appreciation of what the Japanese government has considered its finest cultural heritage. Each class will study a group of national treasures from a variety of facets and perspective, such as historical, cultural, artistic, architectural impacts on later Japanese art. |
