Course Overview This course reads a recent book titled "Painting of the Realm" by Professor Yukio Lippit of Harvard University which explores the 17th-century consolidation of Japanese painting style by the Kano artistic house, based on Knowledge back from China by the monk-painter Sesshu and intertwined with native Japanese practices. His book also presents key factors in establishing the orthodoxy of the Kano painters and their role in defining Japanese painting. According Professor Lippit's discussion on Kano family, we also share a critical perspective of discursive viewpoint of Art hisotry in Japan over past Twenty years.
