Course Overview |
During the first 1000 years of A.D., many empires emerged in Eurasia. In particular, two gigantic empires were established in the 7th century, on both the eastern and western sides of Eurasia: Tang China on the east, and the Islamic empire on the west. Prior to the Mongol empire’s emergence in the 13th century, this era can be understood as a period of transition toward the consolidation of Eurasia. During this period, the Silk Route trade in Eastern Eurasia became very active, and Sogdian traders played a leading role in this trade. This lecture course is designed to introduce students to the Sogdians who brought a big impact in politics, military affairs, economy and culture of the eastern Eurasia over a wide range. |
