Course Overview The Kofun period corresponds to Japan's period of state formation, during which an incredible amount of energy was invested in the construction of monumental mounded tombs (kofun). This course will address the following questions: through what process and by what mechanisms did the society of the Japanese archipelago undergo political consolidation? When can historical turning points be witnessed during this process? This course will address these issues through archaeological studies, and present an historical evaluation of the Japanese archipelago's monumental kofun culture through a global comparison with other ancient cultures.
