Course Overview In this class we will concentrate on practicing informal slanguage (slang + language = slanguage!), as well as some of the more humorous and interesting words to enter the English language recently (slanguage itself is actually quite old: the first recorded instance is from 1879 in the US, though it’s not an Americanism). In addition, we will explore new slanguage by studying the new words list for the Oxford English Dictionary. Students will be encouraged to practice some of these new words, as well as explore questions about how slang reflects contemporary cultures.
