The Irish poet and dramatist W.B. Yeats (1865-1939), who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923, was deeply influenced by Japan, especially Noh theatre (能楽) and Zen Buddhist philosophy (禅仏教の哲学). In this seminar, we will read a selection of Yeats’s work, including poetry, prose, and drama. We will also discuss the connections between Japan, Ireland, and Britain during the period, 1865-1939. |
