Course Overview The novelist Henry James (1843-1916) was born in America, but lived most of his adult life in England. Moreover, he was obsessed by the contrast of American and European character, and the relations between America and Europe was one of the most important themes in his writing. Thus James is the perfect writer to study in order to explore the theme of British-American connections―and it is the perfect time: this year is the centenary of his death. All students welcome, especially those interested in: transatlantic fiction; the history of the novel; gender and the portrayal of women in fiction.
We wil read Daisy Miller and An International Episode, 「
