Course Overview This lecture course is designed to introduce students to history of Russian Orthodoxy and some problems, concerning to religion in contemporary Russia. Students are expected to deepen the knowledge of global development of the concept of religion and religious culture on a wider perspective, based on the Russian case.
The socialist Russia pushed ahead modernization from above ("socialist modernization") and aimed to construct a society without religion. In spite of the state atheism, religious believers and institutions survived the totalitarian regime.Religious art was to be interpreted as a traditional art, religious practice became an unofficial, non-institutionalized local practice, and global connection of religious institutions were used as a diplomatic channel. The religious studies in Russia will show what complected concept is the term of "religion."
