Course Overview This class deals with sustainability of local communities in the age of population decline. Population decline is one of the most important social problems that characterize 21st century Japanese society. Population decline involves concentration of population in the Metropolitan area and depopulation in rural area, thus increasing inequality between these areas. In order to comprehend the current and future well-being of local communities in the age of population decline, sustainability and resilience of those communities must come to the forefront of sociological research. In this class, sustainability of local communities will be examined and discussed mainly from the standpoint of welfare sociology and family sociology. Taking up the cases of remote islands and mountain villages in Japan, sustainability of communities will be investigated from multiple facets.
