Course Overview This course examines how the story and history of Joan of Arc have been defined by the principal historical records about her, made in the late Middle Ages, read and interpreted in various ways in later generations. We consequently consider the influence of literature and modes of thought upon the perception of facts and the understanding of history.
At the same time, the course focuses on two literary pieces as examples, "Pucelle d'Orléans" by Voltaire and "Mystère de la charité de Jeanne d'Arc" by Charles Péguy, in order to discuss the literary imagination concerning an historical figure. The representaion of Joan in relation to religion and war will be the particular focus.
