Course Overview Ernest Hemingway, the national writer of 20th-century America, is a crossover figure. Many of his works transcend the boundaries of literary genres and have been adapted into films. He himself became a motif in comics, and even inspired the character of Tyler Durden in the movie Fight Club (1999). Hemingway still embodies the essence of "America" and is often called "Papa." However, it is superficial to talk about Hemingway's "America" solely through motifs like war and boxing, which are considered "masculine." Beyond the surface of his works lies Hemingway's profound cultural and political insights, as well as his narrative techniques that captivate "American" readers. This course will analyze the "Americanness" intricately woven into Hemingway's early works, while also exploring the skillful political aspects of his works and the dynamic relationship between literature and politics.

Course Overview French feminine voices from the Enlightenment till today. In this class, we aim at highlighting crucial texts written by women or in favor of women’s rights. Starting with the evocation of the feminine condition during the Enlightenment (f.e. in Voltaire’s writings), then during the Revolution, we will focus on the Declaration of Women’s and Women-citizen’s rights written by Olympe de Gouges, but also on Condorcet’s text about the necessity of instruction for all women. In the beginning of the 19th century, writers such as Flora Tristan will allow for feminine working-class voices to rise up. George Sand and Colette are also two seminal writers that we will study. Finally, we will learn more about the Revolution of May 1968, the MLF movement and the essays written by philosophers such as Simone de Beauvoir.

Course Overview This lecture will focus on the Timurid dynasty (1370-1507) and explain its role in the eastern part of the Islamic world, centered on Iran and Central Asia, from various perspectives including politics, culture, religion, and society. Timur, the founder of the dynasty, established a government in western Central Asia in the late 14th century, and after conducting a series of active expeditions, he succeeded in assuming control of vast areas including Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan. However, after Timur's death, the dynasty was often divided due to the competitons for succession, and from the outside it was invaded by surrounding nomadic groups, and its territory gradually shrank, until it finally fell down about 140 years after its founding.
As mentioned above, the Timurid dynasty was politically unstable except for the period ruled by Timur and some of his successors. On the other hand, Islamic culture reached it's peak in the Timurid era especially around Herat, which was one of the capitals of this dynasty. Even after the fall of the dynasty, this cultural heritage would be inherited by the newly established regimes in Iran and surrounding areas. Also, during the Timurid period, religious changes after the Mongol invasion deepened, and the Mahdi movements frequently occurred. It is said that these various religious changes gave rise to new political ideas, which eventually led to the rise of the Safavi order and the establishment of the Safavid dynasty. In particular, the latter feature of religious changes have been actively researched recently, mainly in academic circles in USA. This lecture will also introduce recent trends in research on the Timurid dynasty.

Course Overview The German poet Goethe is often referred to as "one of the most important figures in the history of European civilization". This is due, in part, to the fact that he was clearly aware of his mission and accomplished many important works in the flow of civilization from ancient Greece to ancient Rome, through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque period to the modern era. On the other hand, from such an awareness of the history of civilization, he deeply sensed the essence of modern natural scientific civilization that began in 17th century Western Europe and the crisis in it and continued to issue sharp criticisms of civilization and alternative academic and civilizational theories. In this course, I would like to lecture on Goethe's work so that students will be able to understand the meanings of his work in the history of civilization.
