Course Overview This course will engage the highly diverse material culture of Japanese society during the Edo period (1615-1868). Paintings, sculptures, works of architecture, lacquer, ceramic, textile, and printing will be discussed and questioned about their functioning in a status-driven society. The cultural production of Edo periodJapan will be approached as manifestation of and tools for the expression of social status.
