From the late sixteenth century to the early seventeenth century in Europe, various materials came to be used as the painting-supports. Copper, tin, slate, marble, lapis lazuli, silk and other added a rare and curious appearance to artworks. The lecture focuses on copperplate oil paintings which were the most widespread among the paintings on special supports. When, where, and why was the oil painting on copperplate invented? Who was the key artist? In which context did it become popular? The lecture examines the copperplate oil painting from various viewpoints and aims to gain comprehensive knowledge on it. |
