Course Overview |
In studying language and society, linguists are concerned with exploring the ways in which language is actually used in society, how people feel about it, and how the structure of language interacts with both. Language is considered a resource to convey cultural and personal identity, and what it reveals of language attitudes and social structure – and, therefore, of status and inequality in areas, such as social class, gender, age, and ethnicity. This course explores social dialects, code-switching and bilingualism, language rights, and the often deleterious effects of linguistic stereotyping. |
