Course Overview This lecture course is designed to introduce students to the cultural history of American popular music. Attention will be paid to the formation of music genres--minstrel shows, blues, jazz, R&B, rock'n'roll, hip hop, etc--and the themes of focus include the changes of media, music and politics, and concept of authenticity in American popular music.
