Course Overview A broad selection of texts from Victor Hugofs works will allow the students to access the creative mind of the hugely acclaimed poet that is Victor Hugo. We shall focus on the evolution of the lyrical poetry from the publication of Les Châtiments until the publication of the Contemplations. Different caricatures will help to better understand the text in its historical context. We will concentrate on the role the poet has in society, as well as the importance of poetry. Other forms of poetic expression - fables, epic poems - will be taken into account to provide for a wide range of study material. Texts shall be studied from a chronological perspective so as to provide for a broader spectrum in understanding the texts in their time, and also one focus will be on the means of expression – the gIh – and evolution of the subjective poetry in time: Corneille, Rimbaud, Baudelaire and Roubaud.
