Course Overview @Based on the critical thinking textbook on World War‡U, we will have discussions concerning the topic gEnding the war by using the atomic bombsh, which has received in Japan political or moral evaluations opposite to the American official opinion. While considering whose viewpoint is more persuasive in different contexts, let us analyze the relation between ethical judgements and logical reasoning from the aspect of grationalityh. Our discussion will hopefully cover ascertaining of the fundamental facts of the history of the war through a close reading of The Potsdam Declaration, The Cairo Declaration, and the documents around Barack Obamafs visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, which reported the reactions from Japanese ordinary citizens. Our final aim is to cultivate the thinking faculty to investigate a possibility of unifying the historical and contemporary political viewpoints.
