Course Overview This course focuses on the entanglement of families and Islamic law in Muslim societies of the Middle East, particularly in early modern Iran. While historical studies on families in the Middle East remain unstudied dimensions in Middle eastern studies, a great number of scholarship have been produced on gender issues and women in relation to Islam on the contrary. Considering the gap in the previous literature, we will examine family, women and Islamic law in practice in historical contexts in an attempt to achieve a new better understanding of Muslim societies.
