Course Overview This lecture course is designed to introduce students to the history of American popular music. Attention will be paid to the formation of music genres--minstrel shows, blues, country music, R&B, hip hop, etc. Themes of focus include methods of studying popular music, music and politics, and the idea of authenticity in popular music.
