Course Overview We will be reading Herman Melville’s last novel, The Confidence Man: His Masquerade. Long ignored or considered unfinished, it began to find its audience in the 1950s and 60s. It has come to be regarded by some as Melville’s greatest work. It is also one that has caused the greatest critical disagreement over how to interpret it. For instance, is there one confidence man or many? Also whether it is nihilistic or hopeful in its story. It can be seen as a satire on the US, has many references to Shakespeare, puns.
