Course Overview This course is designed to introduce graduate-level students to cognitive approaches of grammatical analysis – in other words, analytical approaches which strikingly contrast with typically Chomskyan/generativist models. We will discuss several readings which take a particular aspect of grammar and consider it from different cognitivist perspectives. Some of the topics that will be covered in this course include Cognitive Grammar (after Langacker), emergent grammar (lexicon and syntax), Construction Grammar (after Goldberg 1995), Preferred Argument Structure, and Information Flow.
