Course Overview In this research, the Konkōmyō saishō ōkyō (Sovereign Kings of the Golden Light Sutra) was chosen as one of the source materials for the study of kunten. The Konkōmyō saishō ōkyō is a Buddhist sutra translated into Chinese by the Tang-dynasty monk Yijing (Jpn. Gijo) in the 7th century, and was revered in Japan since ancient times. The Kasuga Bunko manuscript of the sutra is one of only a few complete manuscript copied during the Nara period. The kunten, added during the Heian period, provide precious data on the Japanese language at that time.

Course Overview In this chapter we shall deal with the question of “plasticity” in poetry, and the evolution of the term in some of Pierre Reverdy’s and Gherasim Luca’s works. Our focus will be not only on the uniqueness of the so called “livre de dialogue” (books of poetry and painting), which represents the dialogue between arts and poetry, but also on the way in which the text is represented in a given “space” (such as the page) and the role the signs play, as graphical representations of these 20th century poetical creations.

Course Overview The 500 Luohans, preserved for centuries at Daitokuji Monastery in Kyoto, is a renowned work that consists of 100 scrolls, each depicting five luohans (arhats). Currently Daitokuji possesses 88 of the scrolls, whereas 10 more are in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and 2 in the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. These scrolls were noted early on as important works of Southern Song Buddhist painting. Since the epochal Nara National Museum exhibition Sacred Ningbo in the summer of 2009, when the entirety of the set preserved in Japan was put on display for the first time, research on the 500 Luohans has advanced at a rapid pace. It has once again become the focus of attention as a work with which the circumstances of local society and Buddhist worship in the Ningbo region in Southern Song Jiangnan can be understood.
This class explores the historical role of the Daitokuji 500 Luohans from the perspective of an art historical biography attentive to the social life of things and the consequences of transregional circulation. It aims to demonstrate the many ways in which a single artwork can be responsive to both local and global contingencies, and by doing so hopes to offer new humanistic approaches to the study of art objects.

Course Overview The Madhyamaka school is one of the major Buddhist philosophical schools of Indian Buddhism. Modern scholarship has paid due attention to this tradition, especially to the school's celebrated elaborations on the notion of "emptiness" (śūnyatā), based on the root text, the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā of Nāgārjuna (150-250 CE). As this text was extracted from the solely extant commentary in Sanskrit, Candrakīrti (fl. 7th century CE)'s Prasannapadā, textual studies on Madhyamaka developed around Candrakīrti's work. Despite the fact that the Prasannapadā is the commentary on all twenty-seven chapters of the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā, modern scholarship showed a particular interest in Candrakīrti's commentary on the first verse which covers about one seventh of the whole. This rather lengthy section devoted to one verse contains Candrakīrti's critiques of Bhāviveka and Dignāga. For its historical importance of illuminating the relationships between important thinkers in the history of Buddhism, it has been translated for several times into various modern languages. However, although philosophical discussions (and new translations) inspired by the contents of this section have continued since de la Vallée Poussin's first edition in 1913, philological and historical research has not made significant progress. Most recently, Anne MacDonald published a new edition and translation of the first chapter of Prasannapadā and it gave a stimulating impetus to Madhyamaka studies. Her work, by uncovering historical information embedded in every line of the text with rigorous annotations, incorporates a hundred years of scholarship and shows a promising direction to which future textual studies on Indian philosophy can follow. In this course, we read Candrakīrti's critique of Bhāviveka, the first half of his commentary on Nāgārjuna's first verse. Comparing Anne MacDonald's work with older edition and translations, we will review what has been done so far and consider what can be done in the future in the field of Madhyamaka philosophy.

Some of the topics that will be covered in this course include Cognitive Grammar (after Langacker), emergent grammar (lexicon and syntax), Construction Grammar (after Goldberg 1995), Preferred Argument Structure, and Information Flow.

It has come to be regarded by some as Melville’s greatest work. It is also one that has caused the greatest critical disagreement over how to interpret it. For instance, is there one confidence man or many? Also whether it is nihilistic or hopeful in its story. It can be seen as a satire on the US, has many references to Shakespeare, puns.

Course Overview This course focuses on the entanglement of families and Islamic law in Muslim societies of the Middle East, particularly in early modern Iran. While historical studies on families in the Middle East remain unstudied dimensions in Middle eastern studies, a great number of scholarship have been produced on gender issues and women in relation to Islam on the contrary. Considering the gap in the previous literature, we will examine family, women and Islamic law in practice in historical contexts in an attempt to achieve a new better understanding of Muslim societies.
