This work is one of the most famous classics in Japan, but discussions about its characteristics and appeal are currently stagnant. In this lecture, I would like to get away from the current of modern discussion, then approach this issue with a clue of how people in the Edo period interpreted this work.

Course Overview This lecture aims at reconstructing the development of Husserl's thought from Logische Untersuchungen (1900/01) to the first volume of Ideen (1913), focusing not only on those published works but also on the related lectures and research manuscripts of him. After surveying a widely accepted view, according to which Husserl's progress in the period in question consists in the "transcendental turn", we will try to figure out what are still missing or insufficiently discussed in this (largely correct) picture. In particular, we will deal with the following questions, a) Why Husserl does not contend with Logische Untersuchungen? b) What is the relationship between Husserl's "transcendental turn" and his life-long project of scientific metaphysics? c) What is Husserl's transcendental idealism in his Ideen I? d) (To what extent) do methodological issues concerning epoché and reduction matter for understanding Husserl in the period 1900-1913.

Course Overview The main topic of this class is "the anthropology of literature." Since the twentieth century, anthropology has influenced other fields of humanities such as philosophy, literary studies, and criticism because it relativises Western civilization, doubting the border between "civilization" and "barbarity." In recent years, anthropology has made a philosophical turn and fundamentally questioned the borders between the self and the other, humans and other animals, and even reality and fiction. Applying the concepts brought from anthropology, this class revisits several representative texts from modern and postmodern British literature, and thus presents a fresh way of looking at British literature and culture, relativising the traditional approaches of reading modern British novels. This class also aims at introducing a new type of literary theory that might fit the academic milieu after post-colonial studies.

Course Overview Balzac’s The Human Comedy, which contains more than 90 novels, aimed to depict the whole of French society in the period of the Restoration and the July Monarchy, and established the basis of modern realism. It is the reason why he became a model, or rather an antimodel for posterity, as a figure of a great but old-fashioned writer. However, from the 1980s, in France and elsewhere, his works are reassessed in terms of the interest of contemporary criticism. The purpose of this seminar is to rethink Balzac’s oeuvre in this context: it involves retracing his itinerary as a writer and the history of the reception of his work, examining the construction of The Human Comedy with its different poetic problems and trying to reinterpret some of his main novels.
