| Course Overview |
Although David Hume, an 18th-century Scottish philosopher, is highly regarded abroad as an intellectual equal to Immanuel Kant, he has historically received less attention in Japan, often being overriden by Kant. Nevertheless, Hume's unique and groundbreaking ideas have had a profound and lasting impact on various fields, including philosophy of science, moral psychology, and metaethics. This course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Hume's philosophical thought. By exploring his major works and examining related historical and philosophical issues, we will gain insights into his contributions to various fields and ultimately assess the contemporary relevance of his ideas. |
