Course Overview The German poet Goethe is often referred to as "one of the most important figures in the history of European civilization". This is due, in part, to the fact that he was clearly aware of his mission and accomplished many important works in the flow of civilization from ancient Greece to ancient Rome, through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque period to the modern era. On the other hand, from such an awareness of the history of civilization, he deeply sensed the essence of modern natural scientific civilization that began in 17th century Western Europe and the crisis in it and continued to issue sharp criticisms of civilization and alternative academic and civilizational theories. In this course, I would like to lecture on Goethe's work so that students will be able to understand the meanings of his work in the history of civilization.
