Course Overview Our dual purposes in this course are to study humor and to study the language of humor. We will look at various theories of humor, including Attardo’s General Theory of Verbal Humor. We will also survey the phonology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics associated with humor.

Students will learn to analyze humor, first by understanding the analyses discussed in class and in the textbook, and later by practicing their own analysis. They will gain insight into language and linguistics based on humorous data.
