Course Overview Although he produced only four short novels in his lifetime, Nathanael West influence and stature has grown considerably over the years. We will be reading two of his novels: Miss Lonelyhearts and Day of the Locusts. The first of these Harold Bloom considers one of the greatest of American novels. The second, which focuses on people outside the movie business has long been considered the first Hollywood novel, and the tropes he created continue to resonate not only in representations of Hollywood, but in American life in general. West was one of if not the first to use popular culture as a central part of his fiction. We will examine these and other facets of these two novels.
