Course Overview In 1997, musical and cultural critic Greil Marcus published a volume titled Invisible Republic about the gBasement Tapeh of Bob Dylan and The Band, and the relationship of the songs to American Culture. This book has been reissued under the title The Old, Weird America: The World of Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes. We will be reading it as an examination of American culture Marcus found in his study. This course aims to acquaint the student with the importance of what is now called traditional music in American culture.
